                        A Unidade que Agrada a Deus

Deus quer que seus seguidores sejam unidos. Quando Jesus se preparou para sua própria morte, uma das primeiras coisas em sua mente foi a unidade dos seus discípulos: "Não rogo somente por estes, mas também por aqueles que vierem a crer em mim, por intermédio da sua palavra; a fim de que todos sejam um; e como és tu, ó Pai, em mim e eu em ti, também sejam eles em nós; para que o mundo creia que tu me enviaste" (João 17:20-21). Aqueles que querem glorificar a Deus incentivarão esta unidade entre os crentes: "Assim, pois, seguimos as cousas da paz e também as da edificação de uns para com os outros" (Romanos 14:19). Como servos de Deus em comunhão com o Espírito Santo, deveremos trabalhar humildemente para manter a unidade: ". . . completai a minha alegria, de modo que penseis a mesma cousa, tenhais o mesmo amor, sejais unidos de alma, tendo o mesmo sentimento. Nada façais por partidarismo ou vangloria, mas por humildade, considerando cada um os outros superiores a si mesmo. Não tenha cada um em vista o que é propriamente seu, senão também cada qual o que é dos outros" (Filipenses 2:2-4). Paulo deu a fórmula prática para esta paz quando escreveu à igreja dividida em Corinto: "Rogo-vos, irmãos, pelo nome de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, que faleis a todos a mesma cousa e que não haja entre vós divisões; antes, sejais inteiramente unidos, na mesma disposição mental e no mesmo parecer" (1 Cor 1:10).

Crer que a unidade é importante é uma coisa. Praticá-la é outra. Neste artigo, examinaremos alguns esforços para manter a unidade de maneiras que Deus não aceita. Então consideraremos a base da unidade que agrada a Deus.

Esforços Humanos para Manter a Unidade

Algumas vezes, pessoas bem intencionadas estão tão preocupadas em manter a unidade que usarão qualquer método ­ incluindo os meios que Deus nunca aprovou ­ para preservar uma união artificial. Considere alguns exemplos de esforços humanos que Deus não aprova.

Unidade por legislação humana. Muitas igrejas impõem regras para manter a unidade na congregação. Convenções, congressos e conferências são usados freqüentemente como meios de estabelecer e manter normas de doutrina e prática, tentando assim criar e manter a unidade entre as congregações. A Bíblia nunca autoriza tais métodos humanos.

Unidade por estrutura de organização humana. Muitos grupos religiosos procuram manter a unidade criando hierarquias de autoridade denominacional. Grupos de congregações que têm "sedes" ou outros laços estão seguindo o esquema humano. No Novo Testamento nunca há nem sinal de uma igreja supervisionando outra. Cada congregação era totalmente independente e responsável diante de sua cabeça, que é Cristo. Deus nunca ordenou papas, bispos, presidentes ou quem quer que seja para supervisionar múltiplas congregações. Os únicos supervisores humanos aprovados por Deus são os presbíteros (também chamados pastores e bispos) que cuidam da igreja local onde estão (Atos 14:23; Filipenses 1:1; 1 Pedro 5:1-2).

Unidade por meio de placas de igrejas. Ainda que a Bíblia não use um único nome especial para descrever igrejas, muitas pessoas tentam manter ligações entre congregações por meio de placas. Estas pessoas pensam que todas as igrejas que seguem Jesus deverão usar o mesmo "nome" para que possam ser imediatamente identificadas como fiéis. Como resultado desta mentalidade, algumas igrejas adotaram nomes que ressaltam algum ponto doutrinário especial (Batista, Pentecostal, Presbiteriana, etc.). Outros usam nomes que honram pessoas respeitadas como fundadores das respectivas denominações (Luterana, Wesleyana, etc.). Algumas vezes o nome por si pode ser bom. Pode ser uma descrição simples do fato que o grupo designado busca seguir o Senhor (igreja de Deus, igreja de Cristo, etc.). Não há problema bíblico com o uso de tais descrições, mas precisamos lembrar que elas não são marcas registradas que identifiquem os verdadeiros servos de Deus.

Unidade pelo método de Diótrefes. Um dos mais velhos métodos humanos de manter "unidade" foi praticado por um homem chamado Diótrefes. Este homem queria um lugar de primazia entre seus irmãos, e decidiu-se a expelir da igreja quem quer que não o seguisse. Ele se via como "dono da igreja" e usou várias acusações falsas e palavras maliciosas para afastar e manter fora aqueles que estavam pregando a verdade. Ele não permitiria nem mesmo que a igreja recebesse coisas escritas por fiéis servos de Deus! Seus esforços para proteger seu próprio partido eram prejudiciais à causa de Cristo. João não se intimidou com tal carnalidade. Ele escreveu a este arrogante servo de Satanás: "Por isso, se eu for aí, far-lhe-ei lembradas as obras que ele pratica, proferindo contra nós palavras maliciosas. E, não satisfeito com estas cousas, nem ele mesmo acolhe os irmãos, como impede os que querem recebê-los e os expulsa da igreja. Amado, não imites o que é mau, senão o que é bom. Aquele que pratica o bem procede de Deus; aquele que pratica o mal jamais viu a Deus (3 João 10-11).

A Base da Unidade que Agrada a Deus

Conquanto os métodos humanos para manter a unidade possam parecer práticos e eficientes, os verdadeiros seguidores de Jesus procurarão manter a unidade do modo que ele nos ensina nas Escrituras. Consideremos alguns textos importantes que nos auxiliarão a entender o que Jesus quer que façamos.

João 17:17-23 A oração de Jesus mostra a base da unidade que agrada a Deus. União com Deus requer santificação do pecado do mundo (João 17:17-19). É irônico, mas importante, entender que a unidade requer divisão! Se quisermos estar unidos com Deus e seus servos, precisamos não manter comunhão com Satanás e seus servos. Santificação e harmonia vêm pela palavra de Deus (João 17:17, 20-21). Nossa unidade tem que ser modelada pelo exemplo divino. O Pai e o Filho são pessoas distintas, mas concordam em tudo o que dizem e fazem. Os cristãos, portanto, buscam desenvolver a mente de Cristo através do estudo de sua palavra para que possam aprender a pensar como Deus pensa (1 Cor 2:9-16). A relação amorosa entre cristãos serve como evidência para o mundo que nosso Senhor veio do Pai (João 17:21-23).

1 Cor 1:10 O apelo de Paulo mostra que a palavra revelada é a base de nossa unidade. Nossa união é baseada em Jesus Cristo. Quando seguimos cuidadosamente sua autoridade em tudo o que fazemos, evitamos as divisões que vêm das opiniões, doutrinas e esquemas humanos (Colossenses 3:17). Os cristãos deverão falar a mesma coisa. Isto não justifica meios artificiais para impor uniformidade no ensino das igrejas, mas antes nos desafia a buscar entender e ensinar exclusivamente a doutrina de Cristo (1 Cor, 4:6; 2 João 9). O discípulos deverão ter a "mesma disposição mental". A humildade desprendida de Jesus é nosso exemplo perfeito (Filipenses 2:1-8; Romanos 12:9-10, 15-18). Os seguidores de Cristo precisam desenvolver o "mesmo parecer". Enquanto opiniões humanas criam contenda e divisão, a vontade perfeita de Cristo incentiva completa harmonia entre os irmãos. Para conseguir este "mesmo parecer", precisamos ser bastante humildes para abandonar as opiniões e tradições humanas, para assim ensinar e praticar somente o que é autorizado no Novo Testamento.

Tiago 3:17-18 O comentário de Tiago nos recorda as prioridades corretas que deveremos buscar. A sabedoria divina "é, primeiramente, pura; depois, pacífica . . . ." Cometemos um erro terrível quando invertemos esta ordem. Algumas pessoas estão tão decididas a manter a paz que se esquecem da necessidade de defender a doutrina pura. Freqüentemente até ridicularizarão aqueles que insistem no estudo cuidadoso e aplicação do ensino do Novo Testamento, declarando que estão mais preocupadas com o amor e a unidade. Mas o amor real obedece aos mandamentos de Jesus (João 14:15) e a unidade real é baseada na concordância com suas palavras (1 Cor 1:10). Quando somos fiéis a Cristo, estamos seguros da comunhão com ele e com seus verdadeiros seguidores (1 João 1:5:7). Deveremos incentivar a paz, porém não ao preço da verdade. Se formos forçados a escolher entre a pureza da doutrina de Cristo e a paz com nossos irmãos, precisamos por Deus em primeiro lugar. É melhor estar próximo de Deus e longe dos homens do que estar perto dos homens e longe de Deus. A unidade que Deus quer está entre Deus e seus servos obedientes (João 14:23) e, em conseqüência, entre os irmãos que servem o esmo Deus (1 Cor 1:10).



O Desafio na Aplicação

A unidade artificial é fácil. Os homens são muito capazes de esconder diferenças reais e criar alianças ímpias, como o faziam os fariseus e os herodianos quando se uniam contra seu adversário comum, Jesus. Mas a unidade real requer trabalho duro. Exige estudo diligente, humildade genuína, amor pelos irmãos e, acima de tudo, um amor intransigente por Deus e sua palavra. Que Deus nos ajude a desenvolver a mente de Cristo, até mesmo porque os jovens gostam de coisas "radicais". 
Líderes, escutem este conselho: Adotem idéias inovadoras em suas redes de jovens ou de orações e vocês terão a maior unidade jamais vista dentro de suas congregações.

The unit that pleases God

God wants his followers to be united. When Jesus prepared for his own death, one of the first things on his mind was the unity of his disciples: "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; to they all be one, as thou, Father, in me and I in thee, they are also in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent "(John 17:20-21). Those who want to glorify God that encourage unity among the believers: "Therefore, we follow things of peace and also the building of one to another" (Romans 14:19). As servants of God in communion with the Holy Spirit, we humbly working to keep the drive: "... make full my joy, so that the same thing Think you may have the same love, united in soul ye, having the same feeling . Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but in humility consider others better than himself. Not everyone has a view to his own things, but also for the interests of others "(Philippians 2:2 - 4). Paul gave this practical formula for peace when he wrote the divided church in Corinth: "I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who spake to all the same thing and there are no divisions among you before, you may be completely united in the same mind and same judgment "(1 Cor 1:10).

Believing that unity is important is one thing. Practice it is another. In this article we will examine some efforts to maintain unity in ways that God does not accept. Then consider the basis of unity that pleases God.

Human efforts to maintain unity

Sometimes well intentioned people are so concerned about maintaining the unit that will use any method including the means that God never approved to preserve an artificial union. Consider some examples of human endeavor that God does not approve.

Unit by human legislation. Many churches impose rules to maintain unity in the congregation. Conventions, congresses and conferences are often used as a means of establishing and maintaining standards of doctrine and practice, trying to create and maintain unity among the congregations. The Bible never authorizes such a humane method.

Unit structure of human organization. Many religious groups seek to maintain unity by creating hierarchies of church authority. Groups of congregations that have "offices" or other ties following the scheme are human. In the New Testament there is never any sign of a church overseeing another. Each congregation was fully independent and responsible to his head, which is Christ. God never commanded popes, bishops, presidents, or whoever it is to oversee multiple congregations. The only human overseers approved by God are elders (also called bishops and pastors) who take care of the local church where they are (Acts 14:23, Philippians 1:1, 1 Peter 5:1-2).

Unit by plates of churches. Although the Bible does not use a single special name to describe churches, many people try to maintain links between congregations by plates. These people think that all churches who follow Jesus must use the same "name" so they can be quickly identified as the faithful. As a result of this mentality, some churches have adopted names that highlight some particular point of doctrine (Baptist, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, etc..). Others use names that honor people honored as founders of their denominations (Lutheran, Wesleyan, etc..). Sometimes the name alone might be good. It may be a simple description of the fact that the designated group seeks to follow the Lord (God's church, Church of Christ, etc..). No problem with the Biblical use of such descriptions, but we must remember that they are not trademarks to identify the true servants of God.

Each method of Diotrephes. One of the oldest humane methods of maintaining "unity" was committed by a man named Diotrephes. This man wanted a place of preeminence among his brothers and decided to expel the church anyone who does not follow. He saw himself as "owner of the church" and used many false accusations and malicious words to remove and keep out those who were preaching the truth. He does not even allow the church to receive things written by faithful servants of God! His efforts to protect his own party were detrimental to the cause of Christ. John was not intimidated with such carnality. He wrote this arrogant servant of Satan: "So if I go there, i will make you remember the deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And, not satisfied with these things, even he welcomes the brothers , as it prevents those who want to receive them and expelled from the church. Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He that doeth good is of God: he that doeth evil hath not seen God (3 John 10-11).

The Base Unit that pleases God

While human methods to keep the drive may seem practical and efficient, the true followers of Jesus will seek to maintain unity in the way he teaches us in Scripture. Consider some important texts that will help us understand what Jesus wants us to do.

John 17:17-23 Jesus' prayer shows the base unit that pleases God. Union with God requires holiness of sin in the world (John 17:17-19). It's ironic, but important to understand that the unit requires division! If we want to be united with God and his servants, we need not maintain communion with Satan and his servants. Sanctification and harmony are the word of God (John 17:17, 20-21). Our unit has to be shaped by the divine example. The Father and the Son are distinct persons, but agree on everything they say and do. Christians, therefore, seek to develop the mind of Christ through the study of his word so they can learn to think like God thinks (1 Cor 2:9-16). The love relationship between Christians serves as evidence to the world that our Lord came from the Father (John 17:21-23).

1 Cor 1:10 Paul's appeal shows that the revealed word is the foundation of our unity. Our union is based on Jesus Christ. When we follow closely its authority in everything we do, we avoid the divisions that have opinions, doctrines and human schemes (Colossians 3:17). Christians should speak the same thing. This does not justify the means to impose artificial uniformity in the teaching of the churches, but challenges us to seek to understand and teach only the doctrine of Christ (1 Cor 4:6, 2 John 9). The disciples should have the "same mind". The selfless humility of Jesus is our perfect example (Philippians 2:1-8, Romans 12:9-10, 15-18). The followers of Christ need to develop the "same opinion". While human opinions create strife and division, the perfect will of Christ encourages complete harmony between the brothers. To achieve this "same opinion", we must be humble enough to abandon the opinions and traditions of men, in order to teach and practice only what is authorized in the New Testament.

James 3:17-18 James's comment reminds us of our priorities right that we should seek. The divine wisdom "is first pure, then peaceful ...." We made a terrible mistake when we reverse this order. Some people are so determined to keep the peace that they forget the need to defend the pure doctrine. Often up to ridicule those who insist on careful study and application of New Testament teaching, stating that they are more concerned with love and unity. But real love obeys the commands of Jesus (John 14:15) and the actual unit is based on agreement with his words (1 Cor 1:10). When we are faithful to Christ, we are confident of communion with him and his true followers (1 John 1:5:7). We must encourage peace, but not the price of truth. If we are forced to choose between the purity of the doctrine of Christ and peace with our brothers, we need God first. It is better to be close to God and away from men than men to be close to and far from God. The unity that God wills is between God and his obedient servants (John 14:23) and, consequently, between the brothers serving the random God (1 Cor 1:10).

The challenge in implementing

The artificial unity is easy. Men are very capable of hiding real differences and create unholy alliances, as did the Pharisees and Herodians when united against the common opponent, Jesus. But the real unity requires hard work. It requires diligent study, genuine humility, love for brothers and, above all, an uncompromising love for God and his word. May God help us develop the mind of Christ, even as young people things like "radicals."

Leaders, listen to this advice: Adopt innovative ideas in their youth networks or prayers and you have never seen the largest unit within their congregations.
